JANUARY 15, 2010 PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE IMAGES

First 3 images below were taken by James Kevin Ty using Canon 500D DSLR on TV-101 refractor at prime focus.  EFL= 864mm f/5.4.  Baader 5.0 solar filter was used on all images except for the last 2 images which were taken without solar filter. ISO 100.   All images were taken at AstroCamp Observatory in SM MOA San Miguel by the Bay.

Cloud Top Flash Effect - A variant of the rare and popular "Green Flash Effect" - Featured in Spaceweather.com dated January 15, 2010

Commentary from atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley: "This is possibly a 'cloud-top' flash. There are two broad flash types, one is the classical Jules Verne flash when the the last sliver of sun disappears beneath the horizon. The other, much harder to see visually but more often photographed, is where the top of the sun flashes green while much of the disk is still above the horizon. The cloud-top flash is a variant of the second type and it might be caused by an inversion layer associated with the cloud top. We do not fully understand them!"

Last January 15, 2010, the Moon passed in front of the sun, producing a spectacular Annular Solar "ring of fire" eclipse visible from the Indian Ocean and surrounding lands. In Manila, James Kevin Ty caught the eclipse in its partial phase. "The low-hanging sun was dim and I didn't need any special filter to photograph it using my Canon 500D," says Ty. "In the foreground, a young couple sat together in a boat enjoying the romantic view." Indeed, it was a lovely eclipse.
